Case Study: Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Treatment

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Treatment - Case Study

A Patient Education Story
Nurturing Petals Hospital & Fertility Centre

Introduction

Heavy menstrual bleeding is not just a routine menstrual issue. When persistent, it can lead to anaemia, weakness, reduced productivity, and poor quality of life. At Nurturing Petals Hospital & Fertility Centre, Andheri, Mumbai, we commonly see women who have been struggling with symptoms for years before seeking medical help.

Patient Presentation

The patient presented with complaints of heavy menstrual bleeding for more than one year, significantly affecting her daily activities and quality of life. She also had a positive family history, as her mother had undergone surgery for similar complaints. She had tried multiple medical treatments, including hormonal therapy, but did not experience adequate relief.

Clinical Evaluation

On evaluation, her haemoglobin level was 8 g/dL, indicating moderate to severe anaemia. Her body weight was approximately 98 kg. Given the chronic symptoms and failure of medical management, surgical treatment was advised after thorough counselling.

Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (Under Dr Milind Chauhan)

After detailed evaluation and counselling by Dr Milind Chauhan, the patient was diagnosed with a condition causing chronic heavy menstrual bleeding requiring definitive surgical management. A structured and patient-centric treatment plan was formulated.

Pre-operative Optimisation

The patient was admitted one day prior to surgery. One unit of blood transfusion was administered to improve haemoglobin levels. A detailed pre-anaesthetic evaluation was carried out to ensure safe administration of general anaesthesia.

Surgery & Recovery

A Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy with Bilateral Salpingectomy was successfully performed by Dr Ria Solanki. Anaesthesia was safely managed by Dr Anjali Khadtare. Post-operatively, the patient was able to ambulate and resume oral intake on the same day. She was monitored for two days and discharged on the third day in stable condition.

Key Takeaway

This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis, correction of anaemia, proper pre-operative planning, and minimally invasive surgery for optimal outcomes in patients with heavy menstrual bleeding.

Acknowledgement (By Patient)

We sincerely thank Dr Milind Chauhan for treatment planning, Dr Ria Solanki for performing the laparoscopic surgery, and Dr Anjali Khadtare for safe anaesthesia management.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Women experiencing heavy periods, passage of clots, fatigue, or poor response to medications should consult a gynecologist early. Early intervention can significantly improve quality of life.
