Unexpected bleeding after sex can overshadow the natural feelings of intimacy, pleasure, and fulfilment. These can look like either spotting or light to moderate bleeding.
Approximately 9% of all menstruating women notice bleeding after sex, also known as postcoital bleeding. If you too experience this often, being anxious and confused is normal, but there is no need to be alarmed. In this blog, we will discuss the common reasons why this happens and their treatments. We will also explain how you can prevent it from happening again. With this information, we aim to help you make informed decisions about your body.
A] What are the Causes of Post-Sex Bleeding?
1. Infections
Infections are some of the most common reasons for vaginal bleeding. Any type of infection, including yeast infection, PID, STD, and UTI, can lead to itching and burning sensation. Scratching the said part can cause tears that bleed during intercourse. Inflammation in the said area also leaves the tissues vulnerable to damage.
2. Vaginal Dryness
The vagina produces a watery fluid during sex called transudate, which provides natural lubrication. But if the vagina doesn’t produce this substance, it can cause vaginal dryness. This makes the tissues vulnerable to tears and damage. There can be many causes of vaginal dryness, including menopause, contraceptive pills, hysterectomy, and vaginal douching.
3. Cervical Ectropion
Cervical ectropion is a condition where your cells from the cervical canal abnormally grow outside the cervix, causing bleeding. It occurs especially in those women taking the combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) This condition usually goes away without any medical treatment. However, if it continues for more than 2 weeks, getting a doctor’s opinion is invaluable. Once it becomes a serious condition, surgery is usually the only option.
4. Cervical or endometrial polyps
Cervical polyps are frequent incidental findings during speculum exams and can be a source of postcoital bleeding secondary to cervical trauma with intercourse. Both endocervical and cervical polyps are the most common benign neoplastic growth that occurs on the cervix with an incidence of 4% of gynecologic patients
5. Trauma
Trauma can certainly cause postcoital bleeding, especially if it involves injury to the vaginal or cervical tissues.
6. Cervical or vaginal cancer
Postcoital bleeding is the presenting complaint in 11% of women with cervical cancer. Vaginal cancer is another gynecologic malignancy for which postcoital bleeding may be the presenting symptom

- Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen or other cold substances to freeze and destroy abnormal and precancerous cells.
At our clinic, we offer safe and effective treatment after accurate diagnosis.
C] When to See a Doctor?
Postcoital bleeding after having sexual intercourse for the first time is a completely natural and normal thing. However, if this problem continues and becomes a frequent thing, you must visit a gynaecologist at the earliest.
If your bleeding is accompanied by a stinging or burning sensation in the vagina, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, or an abnormal discharge, the condition needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
D] How Do I Prevent It From Happening Again?
Once the treatment is completed, there are a few things you can do or not do to ensure this doesn’t happen again, including:
- Drink plenty of water and take care of your diet.
- Use lubrication during intercourse, preferably water- or silicon-based.
- Use the prescribed vaginal moisturiser on a daily basis, regardless of your sexual activities.
- Avoid aggressive sexual activities which could tear the vaginal tissues.
- Avoid scented soaps and feminine hygiene products as they can disrupt the pH balance.
- Always engage in safe sexual activities.
- Communicate with your partner about this problem.
